First, follow Stan C's advice and contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies and place a fraud alert on your credit history.
Contrary to what some identity theft protection companies claim, identity fraud cannot be prevented only limited. Identity fraud has several forms such as economic or financial, criminal, medical, synthetic, tax, etc.
Anyone, at any time, can become a victim of some form of identity fraud even if they take every precaution. The information is available and all it takes is for one of these clever individuals to find a way to use that information for their gain.
Even fraud alerts can be overlooked if the identity fraud suspect finds a dishonest employee willing to overlook the alert.
A criminal can use your information when interviewed or even arrested. Often, the criminal's true identity is discovered but sometimes it is not.
All that anyone can do is attempt to limit the ways these perpetrators can obtain your information and keep a very close eye on all of your histories including a person's credit history, criminal history, DMV history, medical history, social security earnings history, etc.
