last 4 of your social security number cause Idenity theft?

I keep being asked for my full name and the last 4 of my social for all these job hunters. Is there a way that giving out my full name and the last 4 of my social to all these people can cause me to be a victim to Identity Theft? I have also had people posting on monster telling me if I don’t give my full social then I can not apply… Does that sound like a scam?

Don’t give out your full SSN to anyone until you have your interview and you know it isn’t a scam. I would give them a random four digit number. It isn’t a threat but it isn’t something they need until they want to hire you pending a background check.
